Comments: (Source: National Geographic BIR) Clear Channel Communications
has agreed to sell the company to a consortium of private-equity firms and
plans to shear off more than one-third of its 1,150 radio stations, dismantling
a giant that dominated the industry and became the bogeyman of media
consolidation for the past half-decade. The buyers, led by Bain Capital Partners
and Thomas H. Lee Partners, agreed to pay $26.7 billion for the company,
which includes the assumption of $8 billion in debt. Clear Channel also will
seek buyers for all of its television stations and 448 of its smaller radio
stations. The sell-off will mark the end of the consolidation era for the
radio industry and its largest player.
---
Maybe Griifin Broadcasting can pick up some more local stations with this
deal. Or "our friends" at Milwaukee Journal who owns KFAQ and a good number
of TV stations in smaller markets might enter the Tulsey market. Guy Atchley
sez the Milwaukee Journal tv group which bought his station - KGUN - has
been a good outfit to work for.
Tulsa TV stations KOKI (23) and KMYT (41) will be sold. Both operate from
the old Oertle's building, which was completely renovated and improved 4
years ago.

Perusing through the blogs for an hour or so this morning, so much to comment
on but will limit my remarks to...
The passing of Jerry Vaughn, which I learned while
reading your web content. What a loss! Jerry was my best "hire" while I was
PD at KRMG. A natural radio talent with a great wit. I loved his air work,
and secretly thought he was funnier than me. Plus he was a great family man.
Oklahoma has lost a genuine entertainer.
And the loss of my News Director, Vic Bastien.
Vic and I renewed our friendship following my visit last year to Tulsa, for
the "Icons" thing. We swapped a lot of funny emails prior to his departure.
His fans should know that he kept his spirits up to the end.
It's sad to see good people go.
More another time.

Ah, many times as a sprout in the early 60s, in the Eastgate Sipes, did I
tarry there. Laurel and Hardy, sigh.
Oh, do I recall the Saturday morning, a glorious gray morning of cold and
rain ... remember the days when it seemed half of Tulsa families grocery
shopped on Saturday mornings? ... when a product demonstrator introduced
our family to the wonder of the Frito Chili Pie! My mother responded to the
earnest entreaties of my sister and moi, and made it for us for lunch. I
was reading The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew at the time ... A neighbor just
gave us some home-made chili, which I transformed, for the pleasure of the
Ms./Mrs. and I, into Frito Chili Pie.
Ambrosia!
And the product demonstrators/hawkers at the original Sears at 21st and Yale
... always offering the latest in jewelry excellence.
Those were the days, my friend ...

Comments: It was a great chain, bigger and older than OTASCO, but it
failed.
In my IL hometown in the 50s/60s on Main Street there was a big Sears, a
Western Auto and the local old fashioned hardware store. Ace came in on the
far south of town; wasn't then convenient. If Sears or the local hardware
didn't have it, Western Auto did.
Out of customer loyalty, I patronized the few Western Tire locations in Tulsa,
but I can't remember WHERE they were. I thought there was one on Lewis. OTASCO
bought some of the Western Auto stores, others became indie auto places and
more just closed.
Anyone else in Tulsey remember them? May have had Claremore and Sapulpa stores.
A Western Auto was seen in the
"Back
to the Future" movies. Eastgate shopping center (SW corner of Admiral
and Memorial) had one, and a Sipes Cartoon Hut.

Don't mean slide tag spots to film spots - that was like

BILL MITCHELL at 8 now should re-create

He wuz a gentleman!
I rode Zingo twice for KOTV with Steve VanDyne

Topic: Old Anchors Revived for Sweeps
Comments: Another of my old stations has an interesting try at getting
attention during sweeps:
[From WRAL.com] RALEIGH, N.C. -- WRAL will
feature a blast from the past on Nov. 17, when former anchors Charlie Gaddy
and Bobbie Battista and weatherman Bob DeBardelaben return to host a special
reunion newscast.
The 6 p.m. reunion newscast is part of WRAL's yearlong 50th anniversary
celebration, which culminates in December. They will be joined by longtime
WRAL sports anchor Tom Suiter for the newscast.
Gaddy, Battista and DeBardelaben also will serve as grand marshals of the
WRAL-TV Raleigh Christmas Parade, which will air at 10 a.m. Nov. 18 and be
streamed live on WRAL.com.
"I'm personally thrilled about this reunion because, having worked with Charlie,
Bobbie and Bob several decades ago, it will be a special treat to see them
back on WRAL-TV, even if it's just for one night," station Vice President
and General Manager Jim Hefner said.
Gaddy and Battista formed the Triangle's first male-female anchor team and,
along with weathercaster DeBardelaben, led WRAL to ratings dominance in the
early 1980s.
"It was my honor to sit on the set with people I consider to be the best
in the business," Gaddy said. "I look forward to seeing all of them again
for our reunion newscast."
Gaddy retired from WRAL in 1994, following an award-winning, 24-year career
that saw him report stories ranging from hurricanes and elections to the
fun and games of the North Carolina State Fair. Recently, he has hosted a
series of "WRAL Listens" outreach programs in various North Carolina counties.
Battista spent seven years at WRAL, leaving in 1981 to become one of the
original newscasters at CNN in Atlanta. She became one of the network's most
recognizable anchors before leaving in 2001 to found Atamira Communications,
a communications strategy firm for corporate clients.
"I cant think of anything I would rather do to mark WRAL's 50th anniversary
than to come back home and share the anchor desk with three people I love
and respect. I'm thrilled Channel 5 has asked me to do this," she said.
DeBardelaben became known as "The Biggest Name in Weather" during a WRAL
career that spanned three decades. He gained early popularity hosting "Dialing
for Dollars" call-in programs before moving into his role as the station's
fulltime weather anchor. He retired in 1989.
I bet that will be a fun event. I'd be nice to have had the opportunity to
see the same at KOTV before Bill Pitcock started singing bass in the choir
invisible. It would have been a kick to have Claxton, the Moose, Professor
Woodward, the King, and Broo all on the same piece of real estate one more
time...

Comments: I remember that place and was a next door neighbor of Tom Lester
for many years. He, and all of his brothers, were Tulsa policemen. I always
thought the motif of the hut was really cool and wondered what it looked
like inside. As a kid, it seemed weird to me that a policeman would have
a bar.
As an aside note about one of the owners: One day, back in high school, I'm
coming home down 89th Street from 21st on a stick-shift 1942 Harley (SWEET!).
I notice a car fender to the left of me between 19th & 17th and looked
back. It's Tom Lester in a patrol car and he motioned to race me to the corner
of 15th Street. Well, his house at the corner was before mine but, I won
the race since I was out front to begin with and he wasn't going to pass
me on the wrong side of a 2-lane road, although we were neck-and-neck for
a block.
He also kept me and the neighborhood guys from getting caught up in "The
Great Wienerschnitzel Raid" on Peoria. Apparently, "Schnitzel" was a drug
haven! I got parked across the street facing the place just in time to watch
the festivities start a minute later. It was like turning on a light and
watching the roaches scatter in every direction! It's all about location,
location, location.
Times used to be pretty cool and a lot less stressful. Thanks, Tom.
I've had fascinating conversations with Tom over the last number of years.

Comments: Being born in the mid-50s, I had lots of good times at Bell's.
It might have been with the family or neighborhood kids or later in my teens
with a girlfriend. The go-carts were a lot of fun and I always loved checking
out the train parked out by 21st Street.
I remember one night in 1972 getting suckered into riding Zingo with a girlfriend
and her friend (having previously ridden it after it was built). I told them
I hated the zero-gravity when the cars drop off the top, that I could die
happy if they'd just plug me before the drop. Of course they begged me to
ride it "just once". I was a fool and did. Love must make people do anything
stupid. I rode it again. That was the last time.

Ask what Bell's can do for our fun."

1962. I started there running the pony ride, the major duty being to sweep
up the droppings (such a small word for such a large quantity). As I've moved
up in the business, I've found the job description is pretty much the same.
I did graduate there to running the Mad Mouse and the Tilt-A-Whirl and other
rides. My co-workers and I worked hard to see which of us could get the
Tilt-A-Whirl spinning and induce the most hurling.
Those were the days before Zingo. The pay was 65 cents an hour and the days

It's sad to see the controversy going on there now. But, it gave me some

Topic: Jack Palance - 1975 CBS show
Comments: Before I went to 6, I was a fan of the short-lived CBS cop
show, "Bronk", starring Jack Palance on Sunday nights.
It had a different but now well-known writer for almost every episode, including
Michael Mann. Cast a great group of charactor actors that were chosen for
their "look" and acting (good casting!) and for some reason, Bronk drove
a gigantic Caddy convertable - hello Hollywood reality. It was like "Dirty
Harry" cleaned up for TV and moved to another city. It lasted 1 season.
I think it was replaced by Judd Hirsch as "Delvecchio" the next year in the
same time slot with a young Charles Haid (later famous in Hill Street Blues
as Andy Renko and now a TV director). "Delvecchio" had a lot of screaming
characters but never as gritty as "Bronk".
Bonanza was still on NBC on Sunday nights then and CBS was starting Sunday
as a crime block as Sullivan went off the air. A little show called "Murder
She Wrote" started a year or 2 later on CBS, but some show had to do the
9-10 pm Sunday block after. And for CBS - it was a cop show.

Oscar-winning self-parody in "City Slickers," died Friday. Palance died of
natural causes at his home in Montecito, Calif., surrounded by family, said
spokesman Dick Guttman. He was 87.
When Palance accepted his Oscar for best supporting actor he delighted viewers
of the 1992 Academy Awards by dropping to the stage and performing one-armed
push-ups to demonstrate his physical prowess.
He was a villain and supporting actor in "Oklahoma Crude" (George C. Scott

The theme music from that film was adapted to Jimmy Leake and Bob Gregory's

the decision to boot Bell's because they have not been able to pay their
rent. To try to assist, the county even lowered their rent, and Bell's was
still unable to pay that consistently.
So, the county decides that turning a somewhat profitable amusement park
into a parking lot will somehow be more profitable??? Sounds like there may
be more to the story than what we are being told.
In any case, it does not sound like Bell's will be staying. This doesn't
seem like a negotiation tactic by Expo Square. Part of me is glad to see
Bell's leaving, only because it will make life easier for those of us who
live near it. But I would rather see it leaving because it has moved to a
